Organic Pet Food

As people across the nation turn increasingly to organic produce, they're also giving some thought to organic pet food as well.

Consider the ingredients on most commercial pet food. Much of it is filler, made from substances that wild wolves and bobcats - the closest wild relatives to domestic dogs and cats - would never touch, even if they were starving. Much of it is also vegetable matter, which the feline digestive system is completely unable to cope with (although dogs, being omnivores like bears and raccoons are able to digest vegetable-based foods).

An interesting fact about organic pet food is that while it is substantially more expensive than regular pet food, pet owners find that their animals actually eat less of it. The higher quality and food value of organic pet food seems to satisfy better while providing superior nutrition (cat owners find themselves actually having to spend less time cleaning the litter box as well!)

According to a recent article in USA Today, sales figures on organic pet food has increased by 63% over the past year, because according to Nell Newman (daughter of actor Paul Newman and a co-founder of Newman's Own Organics), '…people want their pets to eat as well as they do.'

Of course, large corporate pet-food producers want consumers to believe that there is no scientific evidence to prove that organic pet food is any better - but that hasn't stopped Purina, Inc., a major pet food manufacturer from getting into this highly lucrative market, which currently generates $14 million a year in sales - a miniscule, but growing part of the $15 billion per year pet food industry.

In any event, proper organic pet food, while costing twice as much as regular pet food, is cheaper than veterinary bills according to some pet owners.

Despite the fact that many pet food companies are getting into the production of organic pet food, only one brand - Natura Pet Products' Karma line of dog food - has actually been approved as 'organic' by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This brand contains organically raised, free-range chicken raised in Northern California, and 'is probably healthier than what you'd get in a restaurant' according to company founder Pete Atkins.

Concerned pet owners can also find recipes for making their own organic pet food on the World Wide Web. In the end, making your own organic pet food from organically-raised beef and chicken is probably the best assurance that your dog or cat is getting the real thing.
